My 1st week in China

Mai 18

Sichuan's beauties

After a wonderful flight from Kathmandu to Chengdu, with a stop-over in Lhasa,

himal

I land in China. 3rd Asian country and not the least of them. Ready to travel in a country where very little people speak English and everything is written in an alien langage.

Where do I go from here?

where

I get to Sam's Guest House, a place I highly recommend for anyone Chengdu is like no other major Chinese city. It's quiet and very green.

sam

Chengdu is amazing. The river is clean and when you are in the middle of traffic, you can't hear a single horn or scooter noise. That's because people are calm and scooters all electric ...

scoot

Chengdu is famous for its food, its teahouses and its pandas.

I tried to experienced as much of Chendgu as I could...

mao

Went to the panda breeding center and so adults and cute baby pandas sleeping, eating bamboo and fooling around

panda

My first Chinese cooking class ( I am definately better at eating than at cooking),

cook

Went to visit the biggest buddha in the world (71 meters tall) in Leshan. Just imagine, its ears are 7 m tall

buddah

Leshan is a major tourist attraction for Chinese people.

But a black man, in this part of China is also a major tourist attraction. It's like being a mix of Michael Jackson and E.T. : everybody wants a picture of you. I found myself almost spending more time posing for pictures than visiting the Buddha site! Got to pose with teens, adults, babies, groups of elderly women and so on.

star

Yeah, i should probably ask for money for each picture taken... (These are not my sunglasses, they belong to the fashion victim teen. Yes, he wanders about with two pairs of shades)

96 HOURS TOUR

I hate organized tours. But when I heard that I could spend 4 days-3nights with 45 genuine no-English speaking Chinese tourists and visit Jiuzhaigou National Park for 700 Yuan, I jumped on the opportunity.

group

Here are the people I spend 96 hours with! All Chinese!None of them spoke English.

Only one knew some words in English. He quickly became my friend and interpreter.

 juizhaigu

Intrigued (and polite) I asked him how come his English was so good. To my surprise, he answered : "I was English teacher"...

No kidding?!!

So what's Jiuzhaigu National Park?

It's a little something like this : one of the most beautiful sceneries in the world.

A mix of altitude, snowy mountains, exceptional colorful lakes with yellow to light blue to emeraud green, waterfalls, flowers and forrests.

If you are looking for a romantic place for a honeymoon or a trip to surprise your lover, Jiuzhaigou is a great place to go to! It's a piece of

ANOTHER COINCIDENCE?

On my second day in Chengdu, who do I meet? A girl from my university back in Paris. Anne. She studied management then did a master in Chinese-something-something . She now works in Tiajin, one of China's major industrial cities for Veolia, a French company. Hers sisters and a friend came to visit her in China and they decided to visit the rest of China.

anne pm

5 days later, who do I meet again in Juizhaigou, in the middle of the forrest? Anne and Sophie. While I was visiting around Chengdu, they went horse riding...

PM

As I saw Anne and Sophie in the National Park, a teenage girl walked on us. One of the dozen Chinese that ask for a picture with me. Only diffrence > she asked it in a damn good English. She's one of the rare Chinese person I've been able to communicate with so far.

No wonder : She majored in English.

yoyo

By the way, she's not a teenager, she's 23(!) and works for Air Macau. Yoyo? Yes, Chinese people make up Western names and call themselves John, Bill, Mars, Sunshine or Toyota....

David, 24, is from Madrid but studied in the US thanks to his citizenship. He earns more money travelling, sending and selling fake clothes from Beijing to Madrid than working in earn-maximum-1000-euros-a-month-and-live-forever-with-your-parents Spain.

dvd

I'm now going South to Lijang and Dali, Yunnan province. See you later guys!
